The High School Bell Rings - 863 Words

The Westside High School bell rings at eight twenty, marking the beginning of the school day for the thousands of young teenagers ranging from thirteen to eighteen, and the students begin the day with their classes. Westside High School has adapted a school policy called Bell to Bell Instruction. This type of instruction means that starting with the bell at the beginning of class, students are taught material with no break. Instruction only ends once the bell marking the end of class is rung. Students are given five minutes to chat, go to their lockers, go to the bathroom, and make their way to class,: however, the issue with this is, it takes students an average of three or more minutes to get to their next class, which leaves much to be desired with the social aspect of school. Teenagers are not given enough time to communicate with each other inside of school. Students also do not have enough time in the day to do their own personal activities, which leads to teenagers staying up way later than they should. On average, high school students are not getting enough sleep, which could be detrimental to their overall health. An overwhelming amount of homework, too many school hours, and not enough vacation or social time can lead to teenagers being stressed, depressed, and run down with anxiety. Students wake up at an insane hour, are expected to sit still in a desk for hours on end, and have little to no time for any social activity in the school building.
